Online Annual Report Showcases Human Side of Health Care

Sutter Health is a not-for-profit health care system serving more than 100 Northern California communities.

With one of the strongest brands in California health care, Sutter Health wanted to build on its reputation for innovation and quality with an equally fresh approach to its annual report.

Sutter came to Blue River to create the health provider’s first online annual report -- a fully, interactive product to showcase the heart of the organization -  its people.

We at Blue River knew the web would be a great fit for Sutter’s goals. Online annual reports give companies a chance to use the full spectrum of modern storytelling techniques in a medium with enormous outreach potential.

Using streaming video, Flash-based technology and intuitive, beautiful design, we created a report that allowed Sutter’s vitality and strength to speak for itself.

From Concept to Delivery

To begin the project, Blue River guided the Sutter team through a competitive analysis of online reports, reviewing the characteristics that make reports shine. From non-profits to Fortune 500 companies, the reports with the highest impact shared three important qualities:

1.    They told a story.

2.    They offered a compelling, trouble-free user experience.

3.    They opened a dialog.

Guided by these characteristics and Sutter’s organizational goals, Blue River went to work translating this vision for the web.

Titled We Hear You, Blue River and Sutter designed the report to literally give voice to the people whose lives have been touched by the organization – both patients and employees. Compelling testimonial videos were presented as visual and contextual anchors, allowing real people to tell Sutter’s story from the moment users entered the site. 

In addition, the report included a video message from Sutter President and CEO Patrick Fry alongside key data and quality reports. Blue River broke this information into digestible, visually pleasing segments from which users could pick, choose and scan, giving audiences a chance to quickly scan the information or dig as deeply as they preferred.

The entire report was designed with a beautiful, clean look and feel, available in both an enhanced Flash version with streaming videos and a standard html format. And unlike print-based annual reports, where distribution is limited by the number of paper copies printed, the web-based version would allow anyone to access the report, whenever desired.

The new report embodied Sutter Health’s multiple goals of listening to its communities, leading with innovation, affordability and accessibility. Keeping the message of people at its core, the report offered compelling human perspective through a modern, dynamic and affordable format.
